Nike have announced that self-lacing shoe will be available to the public by the end of the year. Hopefully.
It’s scary just how many predictions made by futuristic movies have been coming true recently. iRobot and The Terminator predicted robots will be capable of learning and enslaving the human population, which came half true after AlphaGo beat world champion Lee Sedol this week in the complex strategy game Go.
Now Back to the Future II is in on the act. Self-lacing shoes have been in the pipeline for a number of years now with many companies teasing that it won’t be long before the monotonous task of tying our own shoelaces will soon be a thing of the past. And now it soon will be!
The shoes, which will be available in 3 different colours, will work via small electronic pullys powered by batteries inside the shoe. A sensor within the shoe will detect when you put them on and automatically tighten the laces. The wearer can then press either a loosen or tighten button until the shoes feel just right.
But there is no point in being futuristic if it can’t look futuristic. The shoes will also feature light-up panels on either side to make them extra awesome.
Expected to be available by the end of the year, at first the shoes will only be available to users of the Nike smartphone app. Now let’s just hope they don’t cost an arm and a leg. Hopefully just a foot.
