Stop Facebook apps from accessing your information
Pesky Facebook apps are just that – pesky. Even if you have your account locked down, Facebook Apps your friends use may still be able to see information about you.
To stop them, go to your settings and select Apps and then Apps other use. Make sure all the boxes are unchecked to ensure that Facebook apps your friends use cannot see your information.
Know what to upload and what NOT to upload to Facebook
Imagine Facebook is a city centre full of strangers. What information would you be willing to write about yourself onto a large placard and hold it up for everyone to potentially see, if they happen to look in your direction?
The point we’re making here is that our privacy inhibitions are much lower online than they are offline. We seem so much more willing to share really personal things when we’re sat behind a keyboard when compared to being around people in the real world. Yet there is little justification to lower our inhibitions. Criminals live online and offline, and they can use any information they find out about you in very much the same way.
So it is important to learn about what information you should and shouldn’t be uploading online, even if your privacy settings are very good. Remember, even if you have your privacy locked down, what happens if one of your friends – or even you – gets their account compromised and someone has access to the contents of your account?
So things like bank card details, passwords, specific holiday plans, social security numbers, private photos, your home address and any information you really can’t afford ending up in the wrong hands really should have no place on social media. A good rule of thumb is this – if you can’t bear the thought of someone you don’t know seeing it – don’t post it!
Another thing to consider is including your place of work. Remember that if your Facebook account is personal, should you really be associating it with your workplace? Do you occasionally say things or post things that your workplace may take issue with being associated with? Try and distance your personal accounts with your professional life, as the consequences could be pretty bad – as no shortage of people have found out!
Remember, Facebook is a social media website – it’s geared up for sharing. It’s not a place for private things!
These tips about privacy on Facebook. But there is more to know – namely security! It is important to keep your Facebook account secure so criminals can’t get access to it, so keep tuned to our Facebook page for our article on essential security tips for Facebook, coming soon!
